WHAT DO BEARS AND LLAMAS HAVE IN COMMON????
We all know that they are not compatible but a recent study
of a 'bear collar' was conducted on a llama at the farm of Limarno Llamas. Andrew Hunter, a researcher of the
University of Calgary was looking for an animal that had a neck diameter similar
to a sow bear. A llama seemed to
fit the size so John Bednarik was called to see if a trial study could be
monitored on a llama for seventy-two hours. This is not your normal bear radio
collar but one that also has a camera installed as well. The bear movement will not only be
monitored but pictures at predetermined time intervals would also be sent via
satellite.
This is part of a major joint research project in north west
U.S. and Western Canada involving the areas in Montana, Washington, Alberta and
B.C.
